Helios on Cyrano– When life asks you to do something terrible, all you can do is laugh in its face. That is the spirit of this asteroid
The Astronomy– 3582 Cyrano is a small main-belt asteroid discovered in 1931, with an orbiatal period of 5.2 years. It has an eccentricity of 0.08. At perihelion it gets to 2.76 AU, and at apphelion it gets to 3.24 AU.
The Story– I almost said myth, knowing this guy. Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (6 March 1619 – 28 July 1655) was a French novelist, playwright, epistolarian and duelist. A bold and innovative author, his work was part of the libertine literature of the first half of the seventeenth century. Today he is best known as the inspiration for Edmond Rostand’s most noted drama Cyrano de Bergerac which, although it includes elements of his life, also contains invention and myth. Cyrano’s short life is poorly documented, therefore we will be using the play for the majority of our purposes. The play has been translated and performed many times, and is responsible for introducing the word “panache” into the English language. Cyrano is in fact famed for his panache, and the play ends with him saying “My panache” just before his death.
The story goes like this: Cyrano is a French military hero, and a famous troublemaker. The play opens on him going to a theatre to stop a friend from acting in a show that his love interest, Roxanne, will be going to. One thing leads to another and then all of a sudden Cyrano is dueling a small army single-handedly. This impresses Roxanne, who delivers a message to Cyrano to see her tomorrow in a a baguetterie- because France. Among the baguettes, Roxanne tells Cyrano that she is in love- but with another guy who was at the theatre, Christian. She then tells Cyrano that Christian is getting assigned to his unit, and asks the man in love with her to watch over the man that she loves before he can get a word off about how he feels. Rough.
When the new guy gets to the squad the next day, he insults Cyrano and calls out his giant schnoz (that he is SUPER sensitive about) in front of ALL HIS MEN. Dick move, bro. Cyrano is a champ about it though, and embraces Christian. Then he proceeds to tell him that Roxanne loves him; At first Christian is stoked, but then he is depressed because he realizes that Roxanne is WAY out of his league intellectually. Cyrano, sensing an opportunity, comes up with an idea. He would write letters, as the superior poet and wit, for Christian and say it was his. That way Cyrano could get out what was on his heart. This strategy works for a while, until Christian gets cocky and decided that he didn’t need Cyrano anymore, because Christian is a dick like that. He tries to flirt with Roxanne and falls on his face so hard that Roxanne storms into Cyranos house to bitch about it. Cyrano, going beyond bro status and into cuck mode, helps fix it by making Christian stand outside Roxanne’s balcony and Cyrano literally sitting underneath it and feeding Christian lines to tell Roxanne. This works and Christian and Roxanne get married.
Well, the Vicomte (the guy who was giving Roxanne away to some other french dude) gets pissed and commands Cyrano’s unit to the front lines of the Franco-Spanish war. Morale is low, they arent making any progress, and they’re starving because the Vicomte is petty and gives them no rations. Still, Cyrano is writing Roxannes letters for some reason AND SNEAKING ACROSS ENEMY LINES TO DELIVER THEM HIMSELF LIKE AN ABSOLUTE MADMAN. EVERY DAY. Well, Roxanne is moved by their plight, and for some reason decides to bring the troops a banquet. Christian, suspecting that Cyrano loves Roxanne, decides that the middle of a battlefield is the time to make Roxanne choose between them. As Cyrano is about to confess his feelings, Christian dies, right in front of Roxanne, in the most dramatic and French way possible. Well, from that that things go bad- Cyrano keeps fighting, I think the Spaniards win the war, and Roxanne ends up in a convent. At the end of his life, Roxanne asks to see him, and he reads her the letters “Christian” wrote her, and as he keeps reading after it gets dark, she realizes that he wrote the letters all along. At this moment some minor characters burst in, exclaiming about how Cyrano has killed himself by leaving his bed while wounded, Cyrano scoffs, waves his sword aroud while saying that he is fighting one last battle against himself, and then promptly dies. The goddamn French….
Why He Matters– OKAY SO I KIND OF LOVE THIS GUY. I know that I say that about most of them, but Cyrano de Bergerac holds a very special place in my heart. Cyrano is one of my all-time favorite stories from when I was real young (H: yeah, Baby Helios was a weird kid- The myths were my bedtime stories and I was reading at a college age in elementary school. Gemini kids, what are you gonna do?) Imagine my surprise when I look today and find that I have him natally on my Ascendant.
So 3582 Cyrano is a point in your chart where you feel it is a weakness, a point where you feel ugly and want to hide it. To the rest of the world though, they only see your strengths in that mode. Remember, Cyrano was beloved by almost everyone- He was a military hero, actor, libertine and he was goddamn brilliant. They loved him for all of that, but he thought that he would be ridiculed for his nose. It was literally all in his head, and it caused him to watch the woman he loved be married off to an idiot who was completely dependent on his help. This is a point in your chart where you allow your insecurites to rule you, and it can be dangerous. 3582 Cyrano is also a place of rampant flirtation, a Cassanova placement, but with words not just seduction. It is a place of bravery, panache, and charisma. People with Cyrano prominent live larger than life, and loom large in the public conciousness.
