Asteroid Files- Chariklo

Helios on Chariklo-
Have you ever looked across a crowded place, made eye contact with someone, and felt like you knew them? Like you could understand their entire story in that one glance? What about meeting someone for the first time and instantly hating them, not having any of their bullshit? Ever wonder why? Well, maybe this weeks Centaur can help shed some light on it for us!

The Astronomy– 10199 Chariklo is the largest confirmed centaur. It orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus, grazing the orbit of Uranus. On 26 March 2014, astronomers announced the discovery of two rings (nicknamed Oiapoque and Chuí), around Chariklo by observing a stellar occultation, making it the first known minor planet to have rings. Chariklo was discovered by James V. Scotti of the Spacewatch program on February 15, 1997. A photometric study in 2001 was unable to find a definite period of rotation. Infrared observations of Chariklo indicate the presence of water ice, which may in fact be located in its rings. Michael Brown’s website lists it as possibly a dwarf planet with a measured diameter of 232 km. The orbit of Chariklo is more stable than those of Nessus, Chiron, and Pholus. Chariklo lies within 0.09 AU of the 4:3 resonance of Uranus and is estimated to have a relatively long orbital half-life of about 10.3 Myr. Orbital simulations of twenty clones of Chariklo suggest that Chariklo will not start to regularly come within 3 AU (450 Gm) of Uranus for about thirty thousand years.

The Myth– We don’t have much to go on with this one, unfortunately. Here’s what we do have. Chariclo is either of two nymphs in Greek mythology:

  • Chariclo, daughter of Cychreus and Stilbe married the centaur Chiron and became the mother of Hippe, Endeïs, Ocyrhoe, and Carystus.
  • Chariclo, who is a devotee of Athena, was a nymph who became pregnant by a shepherd, Everes, giving birth to the prophet Tiresias. Tiresias was struck blind by Athena after seeing her naked. Chariclo begged Athena to give him sight back, but the goddess could not undo her curse. She gave him the gift of prophecy instead.

Notice that the second Chariclo doesn’t have any parentage listed. It is highly possible that the seperation between these two nymphs, who have the exact same name, are in fact one and the same being. In fact, that is the working hypothesis for this centaur.

Why She Matters– So obviously, no matter how we relate her into astrology, she is tremendously important astronomically. She has rings! The first body her size to do so! That’s absolutely incredible! In the myths, she is connected to Chiron and Athena, two incredibly important and wise figures. Now, some astrologers want to immediately connect her to the gift of prophecy and insight, but it isn’t her who gives that to Tirseias- that’s Athena. What is common in both of the story fragments that we have is that Chariklo as a figure who is truly devoted to the people in her life, someone who can be trusted. I posit that Chariklo shows us who and where we can trust others, or where we suspect those who do not have anything truly against us, in retrograde. I mean, her name translates to Grace, essentially.

Not to mention the fact that since modern astrology rides Chiron’s horse-dick harder than Trump does Putin’s while sucking off Steve Bannon, the wife of such a mythological figure is NOT to be ignored. If Chiron is the knowledge and understanding of the deeper ways of the world, Chariklo is the wisdom to know their application. It’s the old saying “never cast pearls before swine”. It is the difference between theory and practice. Sure, you can KNOW that building a nuclear bomb is relatively easy, but you should also know trying to order the material off of ebay and building it in your garage will definitely land you on some heady watch lists.

Sure, there might be a connection to some sort of inherited prophetic gifts, or witchy bloodlines- but it is far more useful in my experience to us to know who we can trust, who we can let into our circle- our family. I am someone who has to carry a lot of baggage, mostly in the form of secrets and hidden parts of myself. Knowing who to trust with those, who to let my guard down with… that is the real gift that Chariklo lends us, her real prophecy being fulfilled.

To find out where she shows up in your chart, go to astro.com, put in your birth details and in the extended options, all the way at the bottom of the next page, there will be a menu of additional objects. Under that is a blank space where you can enter the number 10199, for Chariklo. Once you have it entered, generate the chart! Where does Chariklo affect your life? Let us know in the comments below!

Hey Helios, you are on the money with this one! An insightful deeper analysis! Awesome mister! :)))

Chariklo 3rd house, Pisces, opposition to retrograde Pluto 9th Virgo, square my Part of fortune and Sila–Nunam in my 6th house in Gemini.

Hahaha, I’ve had to learn to go with the flow more until I could work people out, in terms of their hidden motives. I had to learn not to jump in too quickly, unassumingly and innocently in allowing them into my life. I had to learn not to save or rescue people, good or bad, even though I had the inner wisdom to be able too, because they also have their own lessons, their own journeys to go on. I need to discern between those people who genuinely are helpful in my growth and learning journey of life and those who are detrimental to me, in terms of manipulation or codependency. Making sure people didn’t run rings around me! Being able to learn the fine line of balance between exercising grace in helping someone, verses letting them go on their own journey and not myself not getting involved because it was counter productive to either party to do so.

    Cheers – Shane

  • 15 Gem, 2nd House… Which is interesting since it’s so close to my Chiron in 28 Gem, 3rd House (Virgo/Aries Ris/Leo Moon)
I don’t have any balls idea what this means right now, but I feel like it connects to my 7th House Pluto in Cap that’s being pinged on, and this massive existential tidepool I’m living in right now.
